Description: This piece was prepared for the Occupying Forces exhibit in 2008.
Many of my sculptures have a genesys either in a dream or a vision. While I was mulling over the idea of “Occupying Forces” the image of a fortress manned by monsters and ghouls appeared as representative of the psychological forces in our minds. Later, I had the vision that a bird had landed on the drawbridge and was approaching the fortress. It seemed like the bird represented a creative idea. As I was building the fortress, I tried to imagine what the bird would encounter inside the fortress, and related to the creative idea, I saw three “muses,” but they turned into ghost-like figures inside that stale, isolated fortress. The whole sculpture turned into a question: What happens next?
From a dream: The image in the dream is the sculpture. The voices in the dream are something like this:
The Bird: “I’m flying over the desert seeking a place to roost. I see a fortress, and I fly in a circle around the top to see what I can see. Does this look like a good place to roost? Oh…I see monsters guarding the turrets of the fortress! They look mean! Inside I see 3…muses? But they are ghosts…all the substance has been sucked out of them! I land on the drawbridge. I wonder what kind of reception I will get in this place!” The Bird
The Observer: “The question is, will this new idea, this creative idea be received into the fortress of existing ideas, prejudices, and old ways of doing things? And if it is, will it be transformed beyond all recognition and fresh use?” This piece was made during the Obama Presidential election campaign.
